We were delighted to have been invited to see "The Elephant Man" on opening night at the rechabites hall. This was our first visit to this venue - and what an unusual acting space it is! However, David Meadows, the director, made excellent use of the space with his presentation of this play.
The play took a little while to make an impact, but when it did - when the depth of the characters unfolded - we were transported back to a time when medical science was in its infancy. The costuming was excellent, the set in its minimalistic way, was most effective - enhanced by the use of lighting and appropriate slides to keep the audience in touch with the story.
I enjoyed all of the performances, without exception. However, I would make particular mention of Tony Petani (as John Merrick, the central character) - a very sensitive and controlled performance; Paul Treasure, as the Doctor whose character grew and enlisted our empathy as his own understanding unfolded. Excellent support was given by all of the cast members, who played many characters - especially Peter Thompson in his role of the cold and matter-of-fact Gomm, Vivienne Glance who gave a delightfully sensitive portrayal of Mrs Kendal and Tracey Woolrych who showed excellent versaility in her many guises - I loved 'pinhead'!!!
Well done to you all - an excellent production.
