The Seekers
Fri, 21 Mar 2003, 08:49 amWent to see The Seekers last night at the Burswood Theatre. They have been playing together as The Seekers for 41 years without a lineup change, quite an achievement.
The sound was very good. The songs were very good. The talking between songs was vey good. Well worth going to.
But the lighting was terrible. One of the worst attempts at lighting I have seen and it was the Seekers lighting tech on the house desk.
There was a drummer and keyboard player backing The Seekers and for some strange reason these musicians were not lit. Perhaps it was to keep the focus on The Seekers, but what it achieved was to limit the lighting to a narrow strip where The seekers were standing. They could have lit the backing musicians with a neutral blue wash and used backlight to get The seekers to stand out with more colours or colour mixing to provide variety to each song.
For most songs the lighting was too dark so we could not see the whole group, just the soloist. There were some sidelights from a steep angle and no discernable back lights.
Judith did two balads from stage left and the only lighting provided was a follow spot where the stool was.
The lighting did not achieve the basic aims of illumination, atmosphere and sense of time. What a waste of a good opportunity to complement a great performance by providing good lighting.
Dissapointed Don
