As The World Warps @ The Fly By Night Club, Fremantle
Wed, 5 Feb 2003, 12:16 pmI went to see a preview performance of the new Fringe show As The World Warps and would like to recommend it to anybody who likes a good comedy!
The play is about a couch potato who dies in a car crash, ends up in Hell and is forced to live in her favourite soap opera. However, the characters are so annoying she realizes she has to escape despite he best efforts of Satan and a psychopathic mutilated soap bitch to keep her there.
It's a very funny show with enough good jokes to keep interest over the hour or so it runs, although Catholics (And Sting fans, for that matter) be warned: get ready to be made fun of! The performances were excellent all round - the cast showed themselves to be great comic performers and delivered the many jokes and one-liners very well. There is some adult content and language which some may be offended by, but it is all handled well in the show.
Lastly, musical entertainment was provided before and after the show by Stewart Andrew (& a percussionist), a very talented local artist who did a very good job of setting the tone for the night ahead.
As a Freo resident, it's always nice to see new theatre go up in the area and especially of this quality and I hope they, as well as the Fly By Night, get the success they deserve from this very enjoyable show. Go and check it out!

Sat, 15 Feb 2003, 03:58 pmCavan works so very hard on his scripts, which are always that little bit zany, but I was a little disappointed with ‘As the World Warps’. The idea was very good and the chance to take the mickey out of those dreaded American soaps was endless, but instead of playing the whole thing subtly – there were a couple of really funny scenes, the announcement of the mother’s deadly condition and the Spanish version of the Soap show – much of the show was pandemonium which didn’t work. I always fear the results of writer / directors, 80% of the time they don’t work.
The whole cast were excellent, the lighting good, the venue (a side room of the Fly By Night Club) very comfortable with its plush armchairs.
