My Fair Lady

I saw My Fair Lady at the Regal last night. It was wonderful, and truly professional. The set was amazing. The costumes were amazing! Higgins was amazing (we think far better than Rex Harrison) in fact it was all pretty amazing! ;)

Katja Webb was lovely, such a sensitive portrayal, completely fantastic - especially after the transformation. I think it must be pretty hard to get Eliza just right.. and she certainly managed it. As for her voice, absolutely beautiful.

Alan Needham, as aforementioned a fabulous Higgins. He had it down to a "t" we couldn't say enough about him! John Stoneham was also a great Pickering! Arthur Goad as Arthur Doolittle also incredible, very funny, great timing. In fact I think these three men in particular were simply "made for the parts!"

Also Vincent, a perfect Freddy. Very expressive, wonderful voice!

Oh what else...? I could go on and on! Mrs Pearce was great and the servants chorus sounded wonderful. Um, crowd scenes were great. The Ball, terrific. Must make special mention of Ascot. The audience burst into applause as soon as the curtain went up, it was just 'looked' so remarkable.

I must just stress once again the costumes and set were just beyond belief.

Of course note must go to Neroli Burton and Justin Freind for their direction. The "Orchestra of Dreanms" was brilliant.

So yes, I should leave it there before getting carried away. Anyone who can should really make an effort to see this show!

Re: My Unfair Lady

I went to My Fair Lady on Friday night- not expecting alot, but I was blown away. Everything seemed so fine tuned. The sets WERE sensational. The tallent was AMAZING. Ascot scene - to die for. The actors were Magnificent!
Liza was excellent! her voice was beautifull. and she carried the role so well. I never got sick of watching her. Her costumes/hats etc were sensational! those of the whole casts were.
Higgins was also very good. Infact Higgins and Pikkering work very well togeather! they complimented one another. As did Mrs Pearce who really stood out on the stage. - the whole cast did!
Doolittle simply was the doolittle from the movie.... were did they find him? Just GREAT.
Freddy- WOW. what a voice! such clear diction. In acting and singing I could hear every word. So romantic. I wanted to see him on stage more. He was fresh and alive.
The chorus were very good. Well done to the orchestra. They really were an orchestra of dreams. And esspecially the director/ choreographer.
It was an wonderfull, feel good show. I loved it!

My Fair Lady

Saw this show on the last night-was in for a pleasant suprise. Just a few short notes...
The set was AMAZING, truely brilant piece of stage mastery, the show is a difficult one to stage because of the numerous set changes to practically every scene. Well done crew, I didn't sense that the audience lost focus once due to the speed and magical sound created by the orchestra. Yes, the orchestra. Well, what can I say, it was truely one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard out of a pit! The balance between instruments was magnificent and the only problem I could sence was the sound levels occasionally drowning out the singers.

Overall the sound let down this production. Many of the levels were appaulingly out of kilter, whereby the bass and tenor lines were louder then the melody! Echos were also a problem, especially with higgins mike at certain times-no matter how big his house is I'm sure it would not create an echo similar to that of the grand canyon!

Anyhow, on to the actors. Higgins was brilliant, truely the stand out performer of the night. Last night line glitches were covered up with ease and he truely 'was' Higgins both in essence, nonverbally and accent wise. Pickering worked ecceptionally well with him, the only fault being that his accent compleately changed throughout th performance!

Katja Webb made a beautiful Eliza, her voice unmatched, though this almost distracted frm her cockney accent in the first half as her roughness of a girl living on the streets was not fully animated. Her interpretation was different, effective, yet not show stealing. I dont feel that she fully grasped the role with both hands and a little more could have been put into her dramtisation of the text.

The chorus scenes were the highlight of this show-a standout performer Monique-be sure to look for this girl in a leading role next time! She truely shone out from the crowd.

anyhow, this was only goingto be short, but I must mention Freddie-a beautiful performance, this boy will go places, just give his voice a few more years to mature.

Any other views on the show?!?

Can someone who DOESN'T have friends in this show review it please so we can have an unbiased opinion?

Here's a novel idea: how 'bout you go and see it yourself and then review it on these here boards so we can hear your opinion? It sounds like you're busting to tar and feather it, so if this is the case actually going to it will give you ample ammunition.

ROFL.

Is part 'C' optional? or choose 2 of 3?

Re: My Fair Lady

You know I love you Big El, but I have to go with the slightly less than eloquent Jane here, I wouldn't (and now couldn't) go and see My Fair Lady because (and I stand here to be corrected) the producers are making a fortune out of hard working, talented and (here's the kicker) unpaid actors. Anyone who pays their money to see it supports actor slave labour.

Forgive me for being so blunt. I have just been to a Melbourne Cup lunch. GO MEDIA PUZZLE!!!!!!! And Damo, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I believe that this 'someone' would be this very website with its wonderful forums for open debate and discussion about our industry - discussion and debate which obviously brings about change for the better. I've heard the even more promising whisper that as a direct result of earlier debates from last year and this year on this site, On Stage intends to incorporate for future productions.

On Stage, Pat and Jill, you are to be heartily commended for these actions (and I sincerely hope that you will follow through with the latter and keep us posted), and bravo Grant and the ITA website!

Very in-keeping with the My Fair lady theme, to bring in a horseracing reference.

Did anyone notice the jockey who came last? ....Craig Williams.

Actually, 'Requiem' was really me in a horse costume, playing yet another animal character...

Craig

Re: My Fair Lady

MY FAIR LADY WAS WONDERFUL! JILL AND PAT & THE REST OF THE CAST AND CREW MUST BE AMMENDED ON SUCH A WONDERFUL PRODUCTION.

All you NON-LIKERS please be advised:

JILL AND PAT WILL BE PRODUCING AND STAGING WONDERFUL PRODUCTIONS FOR YEARS TO COME!

Thank You!

Must be amended..?? Do you really mean to say they must be corrected, put to right, and have the faults replaced..?! Seems to me many people on this website have been saying the same thing!

I cannot RECOMMEND enough the benefits of having access to a COMMENDABLE dictionary.

Cheers,
Craig

Re: My Fair Lady

Re Amanda Chestertons remark about being paid.

yes we did get a financial benefit from this BUT we got a bigger reward from performing in a great show. If people like Pat and Jill can put on Productions like My Fair Lady and give pleasure to the paying public, enjoyment to the players and get a bit back out of all the graft which they put in then good on em. They put their money where their mouths were and gave the performers the chance to perform in a "Professional" show - what a training ground !!

I'd do it again !!!

Re: My Unfair Lady

To be blunt, I actually found the show exceptionally dull. It was far too long, with a real absence of enthusiasm in many parts of the show.

I've seen many theatrical versions of this performance and this BY FAR has been rated as the worst.

It's unfortunate that I am of this opinion as I know that the people in this show actually did perform to the best of their ability.

I also know this was an amateur production, however, this was really scraping the barrel in so many facets.

Oh Dear, Oh dear Amber, were you having a bad day?
We all need dissenting voices from time to time but your posting sounded suspiciously like sour grapes.
Ever thought how hurtful these kinds of comments are to those involved?

How? I detected nothing to indicate sour grapes in Amber's post. Merely that Amber did not enjoy the show. Perhaps if Amber had thought to clarify the facets where the show fell down, as opposed to the curt dismissal proffered, we'd be in a better position to see where she is coming from.
