Risky Lunar Love

It has been said that if you see only one film this year it should be ‘Insomnia’, well likewise, if you are on a limited budget and can only afford one play this year, it has to be ‘Risky Lunar Love’. In the same genre as ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, this show too is rude, even crude, but amazingly never offensive - thanks to Luke Milton’s very clever writing and directing he pushed the limits of decency without crossing the delicate line.

The story, that of the rivalry of two space fiction writers, is portrayed by a huge, and talented, cast of very well known Perth names. The result was stunning.

This musical has one laughing from the opening scene. The words of the songs are hilarious and when coupled with well-executed dancing routines, fun special prop effects and a dedicated cast who worked their guts out for their 2-½ hours on the stage – the result brilliant.

The lighting cues were flawless, with the sound, despite the good diction, as good as one can get from the cavernous venue.

In addition to this being a clever and very original story, which you wouldnÂ’t want your Granny to see (but she would secretly love if she went!), the play was turned into a musical by Brent Hill, who, with his group played the bright and catchy music at an appropriate level, feeling no compulsion to link quality to an excessive decibel level as so often happens.

I will not pick out any particular actor for congratulations, as ALL of them were exceptional. One left the venue with a warm, chuckling glow. I hope that this show gets a chance in a major venue, as I genuinely believe that the Rocky Horror has met its match, and that Risky Lunar Love could similarly be around for years.

Oh, and the costumes - beautifully made and appropriately totally tasteless.
