A busy week! Check out the competition below, and our new News section which we'll use to update you on developments in the performing arts scene.

New on Stage Left:

REVIEWS:
We've just posted reviews of the following drama, comedy and musical theatre...

- Antigone: Sophocles' classic tragedy gets a new interpretation by the Hoist Theatre Group.

- The Comedy of Errors: Bell Shakespeare takes a pantomime approach to Shakespeare's farce, with an colourful Middle East setting.

- The Speculator: Theatre@Risk tell the story of gamblers and money makers in 18th Century Paris.

- The Witches of Eastwick: The big-budget musical about three small-town women taking on a devil in disguise.

UPCOMING:
Details added to the Upcoming Productions page include Psycopathia Sexualis, an exploration of love and the gulf between the sexes; and we have entries for the upcoming Melbourne Fringe Festival and Melbourne Festival.

FEATURES:
Check out our report from this year's Edinburgh Fringe, entitled Rain on My Parade. Here's an extract: "We find ourselves wandering across a bridge three storeys above the street we were just standing on. How did this happen? Edinburgh streets twist on themselves like MÁ¶bius strips, an endless Escher print complete with fish and chip shops."

COMPETITION:
The currently-playing Trophies asks the questions: "As artists, what do we hunt? As hunters, what is our art? As either, what will we chance to gain the trophies we accumulate over our hunting lives?" It's on at the Fitzroy Gallery, 274 Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy until 31 August (Bookings on 93476142). And compliments of director Kevin Hopkins, the first 5 Stage Left readers to email him at scarecrow@gravity.net.au will receive double passes to the production. Send that message now!

NEWS:
Copenhagen has been extended, and will play at the Athenaeum from 24-28 September and Monash University from 1-2 October. Booking details are on the Upcoming Productions page.
New scripts are being sought for a festival of short plays on the theme of "ghost stories", to play at the Store Room in December 2002. For more details email anniene@myaccess.com.au.
OTHER: On the Upcoming Productions page you'll see new paid listings...
Sensible People are Dangerous, about an unemployed dreamer who robs a bank to give his girlfriend a better life. But he stuffs it up in this new comedy highlighting the lengths to which some fools will go for love.
Abelard & Heloise: New musical theatre based on a true medieval love story. A famous philosopher and his younger pupil fall in love, inciting a storm of passion, eroticism, jealousy, hate, separation and tragedy. With West End musical star Stephen Weller as Abelard, it's on in Newcastle in October.
