As the Fringe winds down, and we all get a little bit burned out with all of the theatre about to see, it can be easy to just defer to the big PIAF shows at the Maj, or the larger scale productions that have come from outside WA. Not that that is a bad thing - I have seen and loved more shows than I thought were humanly possible this Festival - wonderful international shows like Carmen, Stones in his Pockets, The Mysteries, and local gems Serena's Song, and One Day in 67 (what a show!!) - all of which have resulted in an alarming depletion of my bank account. Nevertheless, I look forward to the few more I will be seeing over the next week - especially Filch, despite (nay, because of!!) what the horrendous Naomi Mullett might say.

However, I just wanted to direct your attention to a little show going on at the Aberdeen Hotel at the moment for the Fringe, written by talented Irish ex-pat now local Perth boy Gerry Lyng. Gerry's company Quiet Man have produced some great theatre over the past twelve months, and 'Buck Naked', the blackly funny analysis of a Buck's Night gone a little too far, is no exception. Excellent characters, solid writing and tight direction come together to make this a most enjoyable night out - made even nicer by the fact that Gerry and Quiet Man (as well as the entire cast and crew) are WA-based. Tonight's house was a little light on, and this is a local show that deserves better numbers.

Have a look at Buck Naked. Simon Clarke is electric as always, Dan Turner is solid and Chris Sansoni outstanding in his character work - you are sure to have a good time. Support WA theatre - Quiet Man are a company on the up and up, and will only go on to bigger and better things, provided that we are there with them in support!! I think it runs another week, but check local guides!

By the way, if there are only a couple more shows you are wanting to see this Festival - SEE ONE DAY IN 67. Sweet mercy. Just see it. From all accounts, and from meeting him tonight, Angus from FILCH is mind-blowing - so see him too. He's all the way from Melbourne and is the hot tip for Best in Fringe this year. And, of course - come and see theatre.asn.au regulars crgwllms and myself in COMEDY SPORTZ, this week and next, thurs-sat, 7pm at the Art Gallery. Just go in the front door. The guards will point out the way.

Cheers,
Toby

PS - I know it wasn't much of a review - more of a plug. I really liked Buck Naked, and there were things I am critical of, but they are irrelevant. Mainly, I like the fact that it was such an exciting local show. Have I said that enough yet? Support WA theatre, okay?

RE: Buck Naked

Bucking Cool (A recipe for a bucks party)

Buck Naked – 7.30pm Bar Cherry Thurs 14th to Sat 16th Feb

15$ / $12

By Eduardo Fernandez

Bar Cherry is a venue that has probably seen more than its fair share of bucks party’s – the beginnings of them at least. Ahhh Bucks nights … that final fling of manhood before settling down with ball and chain and fantasising about soft furnishings, freshly mowed lawn, a dog, 2.4 children, pastel curtains etc. What happens on these wild nights? Well don’t ask me … I don’t remember any of the ones that I’ve been to. Other punters only ever catch glimpses of these raucous celebrations. So having established neither men nor women actually know what goes on at these things (or are desperately trying to forget) Buck Naked is a play that provides the audience with the chance to look into the eye of this testosterone driven storm and enjoy a cracking good yarn at the same time.

Buck Naked follows Billy (Dan Turner) – the blushing groom whose feet are feeling just a little cold, old time school friend and mini mulletted semi-psychopath Deck (Simon Clark) and the perennially downtrodden, permanent virgin Robbo (Chris Sansoni) on a night that has many different stories but only one conclusion.

Buck Naked isnÂ’t just about a bucks night itÂ’s about the Male Condition, the Northern Suburbs, Bogans, Holdens and dodgy nightclubs. The actors all put in strong performances and at just over an hour Buck Naked does not outstay its welcome. Bum soreness factor is negligible which is a very important factor for this little black duck. Not only that but the bar is 100% open, an essential for any bucks. Direction is by Hellie Turner, script editing Ian Wilding and there is a definite professionalism about the production. Music and sound effect arrive on time with the deft touch of Alan Watkins.

With Buck Naked writer and producer Gerry Lyng has stepped up a notch from last years production Bad Medicine which also ran during the fringe. Buck Naked deserves to reach a wider audience than perhaps it will. For the rest of us its well worth the effort. Buck Naked has frequent course language, drug use and some violence … a normal night out in Northbridge really. It is running until Saturday. Go along – you won’t be disappointed.

In response to my own posts from yesterday about Filch - I must simply join the chorus of rapturous anti-Milletts by shouting over and over again -

SEE FILCH.
SEE FILCH.
SEE FILCH.
SEE FILCH.

The talent of this man is awe-inspiring. It's only on for two more days - PLEASE don't miss this.

VINDICATED!

I just returned from the closing night presentations for the Perth Fringe, 2002.

It was an emotion-filled event, as several hundred screaming punters watched in absolute delight as FILCH's Angus Cerrini first won the coveted 'BEST IN FRINGE' title, then ceremonially burned Naomi Millett's vitriolic West Australian review. Naomi, incidentally, won the 'disgrace to journalism' award for her panning of Angus's show, which was almost universally lauded by all and sundry - vindicated in Angus' win tonight.

Congrats also to After the Fair, which picked up Best Local Production; and 52 Pick Up, which won Best Visiting Production and the Media Award.

A nicer bunch of winners could not possibly be found.

Cheers.
