Strindberg (In Paris)
Fri, 8 Feb 2002, 11:07 pmI just returned from the dynamite brain workout that is Strindberg In Paris. I'm not going to write much. It was a brilliant performance that combined dialogue with movement theatre. Yes, there was one rather dodgy French accent that came in at one point but it didn't really matter very much. I didn't know the works of Strindberg (and neither did me mam, who came with me), which include Miss Julie but the play is constructed in such a manner that that didn't matter. There's occasional jokes and it gets very very very intense. And it never once reeks of "literature" (ie doesn't feel like it's trying to be "classic" or is revering a "classic").
Due to having been in a "theatre enjoyment trance" (the state of viewing a performance without even considering it's technical aspects that kicks in to my head if a performance appears to be really bloody good), I can't really comment on anything important about this play at the moment. Give me a few days and I'll add to this post (if I get around to it).
This is a play you should definately get your butt along to if you appreciate theatre that makes you use your brain and that has very little in the way of realism to be found. It's dead sexy. And tomorrow (saturday) it's only $10! At the risk of sounding like an advertising service - what? You haven't cancelled all your plans already to go see this and 52 Pick Up in a row... if you're really keen, you can make a trifecta by seeing The Anzac Letters at the blue room at 6. or if you're even keener, get your ass down to the purgatory stage outside pica at 5. Foursome! Dude! If you head to the fringe club afterwards, that's not really a performance, but it is a bandything, so I'll give you half a point. So it's possible to go see 4 1/2 shows tomorrow night. You can do it. I believe in you. Almost as much as I believe in love... love lifts up where we belong... all you need is love... (pukes and then slaps himself)
I have to stop writing (so called) reviews straight after returning from shows. I'm tired. As usual, I'm rambling. As usual, I've mentioned this. I'm going to bed.
Nighty night Australia,
Tomás Ford
PS [TRIP DOWN THE GUTTER] Mon night @ Mojo's 7-12pm with grouse bands $10
