MadPilot iFM

My Sunday nights have typically been dedicated to television because, in all honesty, it is the best night for it. However, my Sunday nights will never be the same again thanks to the brilliantly entertaining and very strange guys at MadPilot iFM.

Now strictly speaking, this is not a theatre review as MadPilot iFM is more along the lines of a radio show than anything else, but if you have a listen you'll know what I mean when I say it is no ordinary radio show.

It is hosted by four guys in Perth, sorry I can't remember all their names, who form part of MadPilot Productions which is a curious creative production group best explained by looking at their site: www.madpilotproductions.com They do the usual radio thing, for example commenting on the news of the week, but also, and here is where it gets interesting, run regular comedy performance segments. It runs every Sunday from 7.30 to 9.30pm Western Australian time.

I recently emailed them to get a list of all their segments for this review and now that I have a name for them all I can talk about some of them here.

Constable Care vs. The Baron

For all you Perth people you would be aware of the cheezy Police kids education character, Constable Care - the mascot of the Police Force. In this segment he is pitted against the MadPilot mascot: the Baron.

The 7.10 News at 8.10

This is where we get to hear the boys present quite funny news in typical British BBC accents. My favourite would have to be MaCallister MaCallister, the international correspondent who last week ended up going insane at a StarTrek convention.

Strange But True

This segment speaks for itself but what is different about it is the way the guys react. It is truly improvised comedy and, I hate to say it because I consider myself a bit of a comedian, they are very good at it.

Florsheim Wishes

After 9pm MadPilot iFM enters the "sealed section" where anything goes and the best segment of the entire show is during this time. Florsheim wishes is a rip off of American Soapies and each week the setting for it changes depending on which 80's American SitCom themesong is playing! Last week they had Saved By the Bell (my favourite) playing so the characters, including Blade, Steel and Hope went back to high school and somehow ended up looking for treasure on a deserted island. The whole segment appears to be improvised which means that sometimes the guys lose the plot a bit but it is great live comedy.

The Guest List

At the end of the show they read out next weeks "guest list" which is basically a list of all the people who they made fun of or even mentioned in the show.

These were my favourite segments but in addition to these regular segments they also write some one off comedy skits. Last week they had a talk show with Mr and Mrs Hitler entitled "How You Could Have Known that Your Son was Adolf Hitler". That skit was truly hilarious.

While the show is largely entertaining, parts of the show need some work or polish. More rehearsal would improve some of the segments which sometimes can get a bit messy. Also, the inexperience of the group shows at times when they talk over each other creating the impression that there are ten people in the room, not four. Despite this though, even listening, as I did, for an hour makes your Sunday nights just that little bit more entertaining. AND IT'S FREE!

I would recommend anyone listening to this unique form of entertainment delivered by some very funny guys.
