Show: 'inside'
company: WA fringe/ Perth Workers Theatre
Subi Theatre Centre, Perth, 11 Aug.

I won't give a full review of this show because I don't really have the time, but I wanted to plug it if I could. I went into Subi TC last night having no idea what to expect, and emerged quite stunned - three of Perth's finest in a brilliantly unsettling new play, directed by arguably Perth's premier director, Marcelle Schmitz, and there were only 8 people in the audience. Do yourself a favour and go and see some wonderful new theatre, done absolute justice by a typically measured and moving (and at the same time unnerving) performance from Luke Hewitt, complemented by Jodi Buzza's lovely stage presence and George Shevstov's brilliant character turn as a couch-ridden old man looking for attention in his waning years.

This show deserves far better audiences than were in last night - perhaps the advertising has not been strong enough (I have heard virtually nothing about the show and went only because a friend from BOCS suggested it) - but nevertheless, get along to the Subi Theatre Centre for a thought-provoking and highly original evening. Then go and see Art the next night. That's good too.

Cheers,
Toby

PS - 'Othello v. Titus' is remounted this week at Kulcha in Freo. We sold out last year at the Blue Room and plenty of people were upset they missed out - but there are only 2 nights to catch is again, so don't miss out... Mademoiselle Mouse, feel free to come along and gain your reviewing revenge and bag me to high heaven. And guess what? I won't care.

RE: Inside

I agree totally with Toby. Please go and see Inside, a work by a combination of the best that Perth has to offer in theatre.

And for all you people bagging the big companies (and rightly so in many cases) how about supporting some truely local work that is making the gutsy decision to put on a show in one of our main venues. Vote with your bums on seats against rehashes of Australian classics and importing Eastern States actors and support 100 percent Perth theatre.

The fact that no theatre company has supported Ian Wilidngs work astounds me, as it does anyone who has been at any of his playreadings and I agree with Toby about Marcelle and her standing in Perth. if you saw to whom it may concern you too would agree.

It is only on till next Saturday and I heard rumour of a cheap ticket deal for Monday but don't quote me on that.

Cheers

and the Naomi @ the West would appear to agree

It's been my experience that some playwrights - not by any means, Ian - are understandably choosy about where their work plays. Opportunities to get a fully funded new play off the ground in Perth are very limited.

Does anyone know the season details? Why aren't they up on the site???

Cheers

RE: Inside

Hi Grant

In answer to your question about the season details for "Inside" , it is on at the Subiaco Theatre Centre, but only for one week. It will finish this Saturday night.

Bookings at BOCS.

RE: Inside

Toby,

I think you would care, otherwise you wouldn't have mentioned it.

RE: Inside

Actually John, I was merely responding to those who believed that I could give it out but couldn't take it. I offered my critics the opportunity to respond to my negative (but hardly scathing) comments on 'Man of La Mancha' by reviewing my own performance in 'Othello v. Titus' - emphasising what Craig very eloquently said in a piece elsewhere on the page, that their opinions are just that, and that I would not take offense. It might have appeared to be blatant bravura on my part to advertise my pending performance, but I thought my critics deserved a fair crack at me - a crack none took - so I thought they should know where to come. That was all.

Cheers for responding though - even if it probably could have been handled via email than on the website.
