You're An Idiot
Wed, 7 Feb 2001, 12:05 amI haven't laughed so much at a play in years (and yes, I'm aware that that's saying something). Eric Olthwaite himself would be tempted to say that, "Even the serious bits were funny".
Not much I can say without revealing too much of the plot, and I suppose the press release tells you all you need to know: Paul Tolton's "You're An Idiot" is a fast moving comedy about two guys, a girl, a gun, goldfish (sort of), an antique metal groin guard and edible parachutes.
It sounds insane - and it is - but it all works. There are no lags, no pauses, no lulls - just mile-a-minute laughs. Congratulations to Indi (opening in a stunning velvet dress which caught the light and changed colour every time she moved) who had to put up with idiotic husband, David Gardette. Congratulations to David who displayed more range whilst handcuffed to a couch than you might see in many a show (loved his reactions to the telephone answering machine message). And as big an imbecile as David Gardette is, he pales in comparison with the idiocy of Jarrad ("Here's 39 pence compensation for disagreeing with you, and I'll have the T-shirt printed up first thing in the morning") West. Three talented, experienced, hilarious actors plus Jodie Cant's (working with Indira) wonderful direction.
The show is not listed in the "What's On" section on this page, so here's the information again:
6th Feb to 10th Feb at 8 pm
East Amphitheatre, 446 Beaufort St, Highgate
tickets $10 and $8, bookings no. 9454 4620.
Take something comfortable to sit on - it's just stone steps. Take the Aeroguard just in case (but there were no mozzies around last night). And take as many friends as you can round up.
I loved it, the 60+ house loved it, and you could tell the cast loved it, too. One week only. Get there. You won't be disappointed.
