Olympic Opening
Sat, 16 Sept 2000, 07:53 amBefore anyone has time to ask Barrie for a point of view and prints his lame whinge, i'm going to comment that i was really impressed!
Perhaps it was the old reverse parochialism at play, but i'll confess i have held grave fears for what might have happened. But from the stylish simplicity of the opening moments of the ceremony, i was spell bound... well at least until we had to wait through hordes of athletes to see who would light the cauldron.
My previous favourite for opening ceremonies had been the French opening for the winter olympics - i think it was in 1992. This was an extraordinary affair, very stylish on a huge scale and when they showed close ups of the participants it was clear that each person involved was an artiste in their own right.
I felt our effort may have lacked some of that finesse, but it more than countered with sheer heart and the clarity and range of artistic vision.
There's not been too much recently that i've felt could have made me feel terribly proud to be australian - internationally on many issues we've gone from ducks' guts to doggies' doings. But i certainly felt the opening ceremony delivered.
Cheers
Grant

Sat, 16 Sept 2000, 11:11 amI agree Grant. I especially liked the way that in deference to our culture and in the name of showing the world the real Australia, our esteemed Govener General had a couple too may VB's before opening the games. ONYA DEANO!!
