Sat, 24 June 2000, 01:03 pmCongratulations to Playlovers on their excellent production of Cabaret. We attended last night's opening performance and were delighted to see the full house. Half price tickets certainly pays off. The atmosphere and the dancing girls, had just the right sleazy touch which was the trademark of the pre-war German cabaret scene. Having grown up in a German occupied country during the war, the Nazis with their armbands sent chills down my spine. Terry's costumes were, as usual, outstanding and well researched. Well Playlovers has done it again. It would appear to me that Playlovers will be competing against it's self for this years best musical Finlay award. This production of Cabaret captured the true monstrosity of the events that unfolded in Berlin at this time so well that I left the theatre feeling quite depressed (in a good way). There were no weak links in this cast each and every person held there own while at the same time not upstaging their co-stars. Costumes were brilliant bar maybe Jarrad West's as his pants seemed to be abit too tight and the pockets bulged out strangely. The set and lighting were used to great effect and the dance routines were fantastic though they did mirror the choreography of the movie to some extent (not that this is necessarily bad).
Overall this was an amazing production and a perfect example of art as political commentary, enjoyment and education all in one...congratulations to all involved.
