The Sound of Music
Mon, 19 June 2000, 01:32 pmI saw the 'professional' production in Melbourne last Tuesday. Not usually my cup of tea but having been involved in the Prompt Corner production this time last year, I was curious to see how much better the pros could do it. Short answer - not much.
Lisa McCune looks good and does a good impersonation of Julie Andrews but I don't think she succeeds in making the role her own. She did have her work cut out trying to get some electricity going with Jon Waters, who seems to have lost whatever singing voice he ever had and may as well have been carved out of gravel. Bert Newton was okay, Anne Wood was good, the kids were great, the set, lighting and costumes excellent.
The nuns chorus and the band were also very good but I don't think any better than Bill McAllister and the gang from last year at the Regal. Not that it matters much - the Melbourne season sold out straight away and the Perth season is sure to do likewise.
