A Strong Left Hand
Fri, 26 May 2000, 10:41 amHi all,
Well last night I went to see the production at Rechabites 'A Strong Left Hand'. It starred Leanne Page, Luke Hewitt, Greg McNeill and Monica Main and follows the life story of WA vaudeville star Em O'Reilly. It is a wonderful production. The script is very funny and takes you on a moving journey of this womans interesting life. It makes you laugh, and yes, I even had a few tears at one stage (although some will say that this is not surprising as I am a big wuz!)
The performances are fantastic. Greg McNeill and Luke Hewitt were excellent in taking on the many different male characters that came into Em's life. Monica Main's 'Mrs Reilly' was beautiful as well as the showgirl(can't remember the name, sorry Monica), one of my favourites. But Leanne Pages' portrayal of Em O'Reilly was truly wonderful. The role could have been over sentimentalised, but it wasn't and was given just the right amount of empathy.
Another highlight is the beautiful piano playing. It occurs throughout most scenes and is so atmospheric.
Overall, this is a show which should not be missed, not only because it is a really good piece of theatre with excellent performances, but also as it celebrates the life of a woman instrumental in maintaining Perth's theatre scene. Go see it.
It finishes on Saturday 27 May and there is also a performance on saturday afternoon.
