Sex Sells
Sat, 12 Aug 2000, 08:55 amHaving latched onto this principle with their poster for the Dream, Bell Shakespeare would appear to be reluctant to let it go.
The poster design for the company's recent production of the Dream appeared at least a little confused on the issue of whether fundamental to the play was Bottom's dream or dreams of bottom. At any rate, given the particularly saucy poster image, i can't help wondering how many patrons were disappointed at the relatively tame production and complete lack of anything approaching nudity. At least one person i know declared this false advertising.
As reported recently at the Sydney Morning Herald (check out the link below), their poster design for the up and coming (pardon the puns) Troilus and Cressida created quite a stir in some circles:
Now English director Michael Bogdanov bares all and reveals that the actors were all required to sign contracts with a nudity clause.
Quote of quotes:
"I mean, if you zoomed out on the world right now you would probably just see arses going up and down."
More evidence of healthy anal fixation at our national Shakespeare company?
Cheers
Grant

As was proven with Jerry Hall in her recent production - if you have enough sex (or illusion of it) in a production, it's bound to get bums on seats (naked or otherwise!). Although Hall's perfomance has been canned - the season is a financial success.
Does this mean we are selling ourselves short, by using sex as a selling point, just to make some money??
If productions continue in this way - where will we go from there?? The mind boggles.
Whilst not against nudity (especially if the body is nice!!) I am against using it, purely to draw in a crowd. I think we should set our standards a little higher!
Tracey :-)
