Is Banks Blind?

I can't help feeling that theatre critic in The West Australian newspaper, Ron Banks, needs to broaden his outlook a little.

An article in Wednesday's West - reproduced here under a different headline - reads in part:

"So anyone with a bent for the theatre is spoilt for choices in the next two weeks, and such riches will warm the hearts of those who can remember when the Perth theatre scene was as busy all year round as it is at the moment."

Banks goes on to bemoan the fact that such riches are only shortlived and our theatres will soon be dark again for "considerable periods".

Wake up, Ron, and smell the greasepaint!

Here's my letter to the Editor of The West:

---

Just occasionally, Arts Editor Ron Banks can't see the wood for the trees, "Boom Time For Theatre" 26th July.

Like Mr Banks and many other avid theatregoers, I'm celebrating the fact that we have four major productions opening in Perth this week.

Unlike Mr Banks, but like the hundreds of thousands of other Perth theatregoers that thankfully don't rely solely on him for a complete picture of the performing arts in Perth, I don't ignore the offerings of the dozens of other theatre companies around the city that provide a full and rich variety of productions.

If Mr Banks would care to remove the plank from his eye he might notice no less than ten other productions treading the boards this coming week. Indeed, in almost any week this year Mr Banks, or anyone else for that matter, would have been physically incapable of getting to see everything on offer, there is so much theatre happening in Perth!

In fact, if Mr Banks would care to check the wealth of information available at the Independent Theatre Association's website, http://theatre.asn.au, he will find that, with more than one hundred productions so far this year, the Perth theatre scene is busier than ever before!

Rather than attempting to shore up support for a few over-priced and occasionally over-funded productions, Mr Banks might do well to sprinkle a little fertiliser on some of the many smaller local companies that will be only too happy to keep him entertained all year round.

Cheers
Grant

PS. Great to see The West finally getting some content on line, even if three of five theatre articles have to feature Earnest. And Theatre makes the front page! Maybe they don't want people going elsewhere for their theatre news?
