Sir John Gieldgud, one of the greatest and best loved British actors of all time has passed away at the age of 96.

Thanks for posting this. The articles you ferreted up brought back treasured memories of reading I'd done in my teens on this remarkable man and his achievements. Today was an afternoon of well-spent reading and reminicing...

I am too young, of course, to have seen any of those high-water marks of British Theatre such as his Richard II, Hamlet and his Chekhovian work but the accounts from the time (and subsequent writings) inspired my imagination and gave me a rewarding benchmark to which I could hold my work in the theatre.

It was one of my fondest dreams to one day meet this extraordinary individual. Alas, time has run out. Funny, he became one of those institutions you thought would always be 'there' - a 'guiding light' which is now extinguished...

Anyway, in the words of the Bard (of course):

"The odds is gone
And there is nothing left remarkable
Beneath the visiting moon."
