Why Do We Do This?
Sat, 1 Apr 2000, 08:36 amJust a quick ponder - why do we do this? Plays, I mean. After all the late night rehearsals, lack of sleep, occasional (!) in-house bitching & quibbles, blocking out Friday & Saturday nights for a period......why after all that do we suddenly miss it all and decide to launch into another production! Are we crazy?

Yes, of course we are,it's as much of a drug as any of the "illegals"
And you are going into directing, if you think you're stressed acting wait till then!

Perhaps because it is more socially acceptable than roaming the streets in large gangs?

Roaming the streets in large gangs? Hm, sounds like a few cast parties I've attended!

RE: Why Do We Do This?
A good question Siobhan, why do we do it ? The answer no doubt is not the same for everyone. For some its to reinforce confidence in oneself, for others it might be a deep seated wish that they will be noticed by some talent scout and end up in Hollywood, rich and famous. There must be hundreds of reasons "why we do it" . Its a question I have asked myself, standing in the wings, waiting for my cue to enter. I think that when I really examine the Question, that the answer is the fun , the friendship, that one gets whilst being in rehearsal. Perhaps Ive been lucky over the years working with friendly people, but I have never been in the situation, where I have said to myself, " oh not another rehearsal tonight" The performances at the end, of rehearsals are simlply a bonus for me [ At least I think so ]

I agree with Kimberley's Dad,it's the journey not the destination on the whole. In fact after the shared experiences of the rehearsal, its joys, its tears, its traumas, sometimes its despairs the performances come as a bit of an anti-climax!
It's a bit like eagerly anticipated holidays as a child. For weeks you thought and dreamed about the holiday and then suddenly it was over and there was an empty feeling.
So you go off and do it all again

RE: Why Do We Do This?
For the rush of the adrenalin is one reason, apart from enjoying the rehearsals as well. No two performance nights are the same and I always wonder "who will stuff up tonight (including me)". I enjoy the teamwork, having to rely on each other to be helped out when needed. Also it is a big generation gap leveller. You can be in a play with someone young enough to be your son/daughter (or in my case) grandson/daughter and you talk the same language and think the same thoughts. Great! bfn :) Sidsel
