Do drama teachers make good Directors?
Sat, 15 Jan 2000, 02:01 pmHi all. After Xmas time in the UK I return to find all sorts of things in my life have changed and the ITA page is one and a great deal of catching up has to be done so as not miss anything.
What's this little 'Poll' window for then, stirring up green room gossip I suppose.
And what about Joe's revelation that the F. results were leaked. How can that be so. I thought there were only 2 people (1 inside ITA and 1 with the auditor) who knew the results. Doesn't seem to have created much of a stir in the ranks though. I wonder why? Perhaps not many have read it yet.
Now this is a point of view that a further 16 or so people can look at over the next week (courtesy of the live counter!)
Asking "Do drama teachers make good Directors?" is a bit like the last referendum. I think the wrong question has been asked. Of course Teachers CAN make good directors....but don't let us assume that they WILL be good directors or adjudicators or christmas tree fairies or lolly pop persons. Like everyone else they all have the ability but not all aspire to it.
Oh well, Shirley and I are off to support Joe and Jenny tonight and to quote Norma, for a look at life, love and all that Jazz.
I didn't know they were also performing Chicago, Norma!

I agree with nearly everything you say Michael up until the last
bit where you indicate that "they all have the ability..." re
Drama Teachers making good directors.
I'm constantly amazed that there is this accepted truth that
being an expert in Drama makes one an expert in Theatre.
Stagecraft and the art of acting are not things one becomes
expert at by studying Drama. While I don't believe it is
impossible to be a good Director if your background is in Drama,
I also don't believe that a vast knowledge of Drama will ensure
you can direct.
