Has anybody seen page 7 of Tuesday's 'West'?
Item headed "WA tops nation in cultural pursuits"
"Figures released by the Bureau of Statistics showed that, on a per capita basis, more people in WA attended the theatre, dance, classical concerts, and operas or musicals than in any other state "
Nationally 16.6% attended theatre while in WA the figure is 17.9%
Rest of figures too long to quote but look them up, they are very interesting.
Next time your local Council indicates that allocating money to "culture" is a waste of time show them this!

Thank you Norma for pointing this one out. WA is leading the way. Thank you ITA and thank you WA Patrons.

hehe
I have to admire your passion, Jeff.
I considered the most telling aspect of The West report (good on you Nick Miller!) to be the surprised reaction from Ricky Burges, director-general of WA's Ministry for Culture and the Arts.
"The past year has generally held bad news for Perth's arts community, with the near closure of Effie Crump Theatre..."
"'It is great that the public and community are interested in and supporting the industry,' Ms Burges said. 'Unfortunately, that doesn't translate into the costs related to running the industry.'"
Clearly ArtsWA was not expecting these sorts of figures given attendance and takings at funded performances.
I wonder what percentage of the ABS figure was made up by people not attending ArtsWA funded theatre, but community theatre instead?
If anyone is interested the actual Australian Bureau of Statistics release can be found here:
