Surfin' Girlfriend Cast
Tue, 3 Aug 1999, 11:25 amI was just about to post this message re the fantastic cast assembled for Surfin' Girlfriend when I saw the discussion about pre-casting, so here's my two cents worth...In my "other" life I work as a Casting Director and my philosophy has always been to wait and see who turns up. It's worthwhile inviting people to audition if you see them fitting a particular role and I certainly empathise with community theatre directors trying to cover themselves as it's a different ball game finding actors to do things for love than earning a living for it, but don't promise a part to someone until you've seen the choices available. You just never know who's going to walk through the door or who's going to put in a brilliant audition for a role you would never have envisioned that person playing. Surely the purpose of an audition is to allow actors to show you their range and their interpretation of a part. And if a director has pre-cast a role, it's only fair that they DO NOT audition it - if you're going to hedge your bets, then don't make any promises. It hurts more people and lessens your credibility in the long run.Having said all this, the following have been cast for the Playlovers production of "Surfin' Girlfriend" (you can book now for September 3, 4, 5, 9, or 11 on 0415 777 173) - and there is only one cast member who was given a part without an audition because no-one auditioned..as it turns out, I'm glad because he is perfect!Cutback Dave - Scott Martin Wednesday Beach - Kristy MitchellRadical Stevens - Ben Dickson Margaret River - Ilona BartschKevin Day - Anthony Harwood Malcolm Houston - Richard BakerGhost of Joseph Sandlefield - Derek WilliamsonEvelyn Lipshitz - Andrea Stimson
