Theatre - 4th wall & a roof
Tue, 22 June 1999, 08:03 pmTo all those who dont get the 'Mandurah Telegraph', which must be the 99.99%, the Little Theatre are loosing their 4 walls and roof.Although they have known this for up to 5 years, with a years extension, they leave it till the death knock, as usual, to inform the locals. As from next month they are only on a month to month tenancy, as it's alleged the Council ahve realised the value of the land and want to sell it off -money grubbing..... !.As they have only $120 000.00 in their tin, they were offered a further Council grant of $60 000.00 in the beginning - but like most councils they have rescinded that, its now a loan.Like most theatre orientated groups, no matter what the dead line "lets not worry about it - plenty of time" has been their driving force. Sure last year they spent $25 000.00 to put on My Fair Lady and made $25 000.00 for their effort. But now they find that building a theatre is going to cost them at least $300 000.00 +, this is a lot more than it would have cost in the beginning. However, they went down the track of gaining a portion of land from the Council and for $300k, over the next 10 years of the lease, to build to Council standards. They could acquire a theatre - not so fast .. NO everything would belong to the Council and they were still a tenant. So they opted to build with the Education Department at Halls Head in the new school, but that looks like $300K+ to gain a stage and backstage area only. The auditorium will be the schools then the restrictions come into play. This is were they are now and all of the building flurry has happened in the last year and a bit - when will we ever learn? ( a good title for a song )Now they are spitting the dummy and believe the theatre will fold - this attitude should be committed to the "Crapper Valve" ( greatest invention of this century) and disposed of properly, surely theatre is not just 4 walls and a leakingWhy is it with thespians, that no matter what or how long they have, everything is a rush and condensed into the week before the opening! "necessity is the mother of mothers" is this why"art is by design and artistic creation is by accident" Although I suppose with enough practice we will get it perfect at least once!It is a bit wobbly on this bucket - a milk crate would be better next time!(as the "Bill" has just started - I won't have time to spell check this)Joe McCabe
