Busselton Rep's 50th Anniversary
Sun, 28 Mar 1999, 03:05 pm1999 marks Busselton Repertory Club's 50th Anniversary. We started the year with another pantomime, 'Flash Whittington, an original script by club member Rod Clark (yours truly) and have just completed a successful season of the J.B.Priestley classic 'An Inspector Calls', with immediate past president Keith Scott doing a brilliant job in the title role made famous by Sir Ralph Richardson. Here's a quick history of the club for those who are interested. Drop in and see us, or one of our productions, if you're down our way.Busselton Repertory Club Inc.Its uncertain when the Busselton Repertory Club had it conception and gestation but its birth was at a meeting convened by Arthur Grocock onMay 29 1949. There the Busselton Repertory Society was formed with Sir (then Mr) Stewart Bovell as its first patron, a position he still holds.Performances were held at the old Catholic Hall in Busselton for a number of years, while the members from 1951 onwards looked for a morepermanent home.In 1956, the Society became an incorporated body, renamed the Busselton Repertory Club. The Club weathered the introduction of television, which saw audiences dwindle and in 1962 was in a position to renovate and move into theWeld Hall. Originally opened in 1881, the hall had been a library, Masonic Temple, dance hall, gymnasium, school and auction mart. The Clubmoved into the fully converted and renamed Weld Theatre, in 1963.Today, the club is a vibrant body with members performing on average, three plays and a pantomime every year. The plays normally run for aseason of at least six performances each, while the yearly panto runs for ten performances and always turns a healthy profit. As well as the productions, the Club organises occasional excursions to other live performances in Bunbury or Perth as well as social nights at thetheatre. For more information contact :President - Joy Conrau 08 97533231Vice President - Alan Hart 08 97522361Secretary - Peggy Mavor 08 97522293Treasurer - Shirley Silverman 08 97541621
