Sat, 7 Nov 1998, 02:01 pmFor all lovers of superior musical theatre, Playlovers is producing The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas - Book by Larry L. King & Peter Masterson, Music & Lyrics by Carol Hall. It is directed by WAAPA Musical Theatre graduate Gillian Binks, Musical Direction by Caroline Badnall & Choreography by Hayley Binks.This is a lively musical filled with colourful characters and catchy songs, which combine big Broadway style with country and gospel music.Miss Mona (played by WAAPA Musical Theatre graduate, Helen McFarlane) runs the Chicken Ranch, as it came to be known during harder times when the girls began accepting poultry in trade, which has existed peacefully in the little old town of Gilbert, Texas since the 1890's.It is now 1976 and Melvin P. Thorpe (Clayton Zwaneburg), a holier-than-thou preacher type, "shines his spotlight" on the existence of Mona's palace. Melvin's "Watchdog" television show is enormously popular and he receives ever-growing support from the people of Gilbert for his crusade to close down the Chicken Ranch.Ed Earl, the bad-tempered local Sheriff (Alex McLennan), tries to prevent the closure of the Whorehouse but only complicates matters further. Melvin becomes increasingly determined to win his war against the "house of ill-repute". The situation becomes volatile when Melvin's fight for morality is televised on Johnny Carson and becomes a national issue. The Governor of Texas (Christopher Churchouse), is put under enormous pressure and is forced to make a decision which could greatly affect the lives of Miss Mona and her girls.The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is packed with fun and laughs but will also touch your heart. The Show features an exceptional cast. It is being performed at the Subiaco Theatre Centre, Hamersley Rd. Subiaco on November 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27 & 28 at 8pm and November 21 & 28 at 2pm.
