Help! I am due to spend a year in Australia beginning in the next few months. I will be travelling alone and have a 1 year working visa beginning on the date I arrive in Australia from the UK. I currently work as a Marketing Assistant in a high-profile arts venue in England and hope to continue in the field of the arts throughout my career. Since I'm travelling on my own, I would feel safer if I could arrange work in Australia from the UK and use my stay as both a chance to see the country whilst remaining in my chosen field. Of course, I understand that one is only supposed to use the working visa to find short-term work to fund travelling. OK, I'll do box office work, bar work in arts venues...anything, I do however have database, direct mail, dance teaching, education project co-ordination, press liason, desk top publishing skills and many more! CAN ANYONE POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?

Re: Help!

Hi KarenI'd love to be able to talk about a booming arts industry in Western Australia with plenty of employment opportunities, but unfortunately that is not the case. (geez, i'm full of doom and gloom)Professionally BOCS Ticketing and the Perth Theatre Trust manage most of the venues and most of the ticketing in town. The Festival of Perth is a large employer of casual and part-time staff for a couple of months around Dec-Mar. I don't have contact details handy for these. Let me know if you'd like more info. There are some venues you may like to try for co-op or semi-professional work. The Blue Room and depending on the time of year ArtRage (check the links page on this website) could present opportunities. The Independent Theatre Association and community theatres in general would welcome you with open arms - but they won't be able to put money in your pocket or food in your belly. You may do well to try the east coast (Sydney & Melbourne) - there is a great deal more happening over there and perhaps more opportunities.Do you know of anywhere in or near Exeter I might find some opportunities?:)CheersGrant
