film and television courses
Mon, 29 Aug 2005, 03:09 pmHi,
I live in Perth, W.A and am wishing to study a course in Film and Television next year, in the production side of things. Initially I thought i would do a postgraduate in film and television at Curtin University as I completed a teaching degree there nine years ago. However I have since heard, from a person working as a production assistant for a documentary company in Fremantle, that a TAFE course would be much more useful and hands on (less theoretical) and is very well accepted by the industry. If this is the case it would be a lot better financially too for me! I was just wondering if anyone had any advice about this. Do you agree with what she said or think otherwise? If i want to get into production/editing and don't want to have to go back to study for that long, what are my best options? I have no previous experience, only in theatre.
Applications for TAFE close september 30, so I would really appreciate a fast response!!!,
Thanks!
Laura

Hi there.. I'm currently studying at TAFE for my cert 4 in Screen ( Television and Production) and have found it to be really informative and interesting. I was originally told that the TAFE courses weren't particularly hands on.. But 2 out of the 3 days that I attend are spent in the studio filming. If you decide on doing this course, I'd speak to the TAFE first and make sure that you are doing the course that you want. I applied for Screen which was mean't to be a combination of TV and Film , but our class ended up only specialising in TV.. which was a shame.
Good luck with choosing a course!
