This has precious little to do with theatre or acting, but I can't let the death of Hunter S. Thompson (noted social commentator, gonzo journalist and all-round weird guy) go without a comment or two.

Those of you familiar with my writings (or typings as the case may be) are aware of Thompson's profound influence on my linguistic approach and drinking habits. I am currently going through a mix of emotions; sadness at his death, fury at the possibile cause, desolation that we will not see his like again. And despair that in these conservative times, a man of such extremes pathologically prone to pricking the balloons of pomposity in government has apparently found it too hard to deal with.

If he kills himself to forgo the ravages of time on his chemically addled system, he is a brave man. Maybe.

If he kills himself to escape the Times Ahead, he is a coward and a hypocrite. Time will tell.

And it's probably just as well the vicious bastard is out of the gene pool- and he'd mostly likely agree.

But you gotta love a guy whose Nixon Obituary ran lines like "He was a crook.... he was so crooked he needed a valet to help screw his pants on. Even his funeral was illegal; it should've taken place in trashcan".

Ho ho ho... mahalo, Dr T.
