I'm Lazy
Sat, 13 Nov 2004, 06:40 pmhere it goes...
i've been reading lately that ppl want to make plays that involve teenagers... i think excellent maybe a chance for me to get into something... but then i see that all this is mainly for W.A ppl... so i think that if i search hard enough i might find ppl that are having a play made for mainly teenagers, produced by ppl that want teenagers in the melbourne area, but because i'm a lazy person... or i just can't be bothered (if you look closely... well you don't even have to look closely to see that i can't even write PEOPLE properly) and i wanna know if people dont' have plays being made in the melbourne area for teenagers or if i'm just dumb...
thank you all for your time and co-operation,
- DilanMelis
by the way if there ISN'T plays being made around here can i suggest to all the melbournian teenages that we make our own play?

Re: I'm Lazy
Sun, 14 Nov 2004, 01:27 pmDilanMelis, I run a newsletter (free!!!!) for theatre workers in the Melbourne area. If you email me and tell me that you want to be on the mailing list, I can send it to you. It's over the email, so no need for snail mail addresses, it's once a week, it's FREE and it has professional jobs and other stuff in it.
There are heaps of amatuer groups in Melbourne, plus various 'fringe' groups that are around, and there is always a show being produced that needs young people - the only way to make a living in this industry is to produce your own work. So making your own show is a great idea. (Though I have to warn you, it is expensive, and you are better off writing a show and then going to things like 'Next Wave Festival' - they offer $5000 for shows for their festival - and other stuff.) There are heaps of plays floating around for you to find and produce, you just have to keep asking around!
If you want to get involved, I can suggest going to Platform Youth Theatre in Darebin (northern suburb) or Malvern Theatre Company (in Malvern) or Camberwell Theatre Company (in Camberwell). All are amateur but Platform deals specifically with youth and is produced by the youth around that area. This site also links a lot of amateur companies, so just search around til you find something. If all else fails, try going and doing work experience with professional companies like Arena Theatre Company (in Nth Melb) who do work for youth.
And finally, if you are serious about organising a show yourself, I am willing to offer advice and help. I know most of the venues and companies in Melbourne and run my own small (puppetry) company, plus have a lot of contacts with fringe groups who may be looking for people to get involved. I also have some scripts sitting around which are not exactly youth-oriented (it's not about drugs or school or anything like that), but I would love to see performed.
Anyway, hope that all helps, and email me if you want to talk!
