New Theatre in Cockburn City WA
Sat, 2 Oct 2004, 03:12 pmThe City of Cockburn how has itÂ’s own Community Theatre group.
Primarily it was set up with funding for SeniorÂ’s & old wrinklies over 50 - but we do have a Youth Theatre group for the under 50Â’s as well!
While most of the membership are older thespians & retired theatre proÂ’s, there is also a large number of them newbies, that are prepared to have a go - & do IT in the dark!
We have named IT the Phoenix Theatre, because of a very loose tie up with the Scottish clan name ‘Cockburn’, the burning & sacking that brought the US ‘White House’ about, growing from the ashes. Thus connecting it with the original ‘Cock pit’ Theatre which suffered the same fate in the 1600’s, becoming the ‘Phoenix Theatre, which inturn follows on, to line up with the ‘Phoenix’ allotment of the first settlers, that is still a significant part of the present Cockburn City area.
The name possibly describes ‘what we are about’ better then all that unconnected drivel - because they seem to be coming out of the wood work! Super charging their wheelchairs & tuning up the old Zimmer frames to join in!
We even have a plan to build our own theatre & possibly name it the ‘Chook Shed’ - It is fantastic, what can be done with these new ‘Pacemaker batteries these days.
Our next meeting is at the City of Cockburn Council Offices - meeting room 1. Tuesday 11th of October @ 10:30 am. [If you get lost just ask at reception!] Everyone is welcome! {By the way it is a theatre group for everyone - It was only set up by SeniorÂ’s & youth members]
The first production will possibly be "A Farndale Farce of MaxBÂ’th" in early Â’05.
You can contact me on 94342365 [anytime] or Irinni @ Cockburn Volunteer Resource Centre 94113490[office hours] for further info.
