ATTIC THEATRE COMPANY

At last weÂ’re up and running!

After Stephen Lee spent a couple of years getting to grips with the Perth theatre scene, and in the process tripped over someone who loves finance, marketing and all that other admin stuff as much as he hates it and is prepared to go into business with him (the clearly crazy Margaret Allen), we can at last announce something both of us have dreamed of for more years than is polite to acknowledge…a new theatre company – Attic Theatre.

So what is Attic Theatre Company?
Now this is usually the bit where the Artistic Director tells everyone just how groundbreakingly different the new company will be – how it will push back the barriers of drama and produce stunning new and original work. Not this one, though! We have nothing against new plays; they are the lifeblood of theatre. But there are several professional companies in Perth already dedicated to doing just that. Attic Theatre Company intends to concentrate solely on classic plays: plays that have proved their worth over twenty years, or two hundred or even two thousand. And not in a stuffy academic way – but with productions that are bold, lively, occasionally irreverent but always fresh and exciting.

While we know that the people who usually attend theatre in Perth will have a great time at Attic productions, we also want to reach out to those who think professional-quality theatre is too expensive, too difficult or too inaccessible for them. The well attended productions at the Shakespeare in Kings Park each year show that even those who are not regular theatre-goers are keen for this kind of approach. We donÂ’t aim to compete with Kings Park (even though weÂ’ll be just round the corner!), just to offer a few more choices for those who want to see a good play in a relaxed atmosphere with maybe a picnic or glass of wine.

With this in mind, the Attic Theatre Company launch will comprise a three-play season of open air performances in an amazing location.

So where will Attic Theatre be performing?
We searched long and hard to find somewhere truly extraordinary for our launch season and have been incredibly lucky to arrange a deal with St GeorgeÂ’s College, opposite the University of Western Australia (where Mounts Bay Road meets Stirling Highway). This beautiful seventy year old faux-Gothic building has a courtyard that could have been made for drama, plenty of grass for picnicking, a sheltered space that will be easier on the voice than the wide open areas of Kings Park, and a backdrop of old ivied walls, turrets, steps and fountains.

What plays will the Company be presenting?
Here is the proposed schedule for our opening season:

December A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens
A new adaptation of this timeless classic that remains totally faithful to the original work: funny, powerful, moving and thought provoking.

January As You Like It William Shakespeare
This wonderful play deals with the problems of townspeople attempting to come to terms with exile in the forest, and Rosalind (disguised as a boy) giving lessons in love to her unsuspecting suitor.

February The Real Inspector Hound Tom Stoppard
A brilliantly funny pastiche of 1920sÂ’ Agatha Christie, where two critics, attending the first night of a typical whodunnit (fog-bound house cut off on lonely moors) get drawn into the action on stage.

All the above will be directed by Attic Theatre CompanyÂ’s Artistic Director, Stephen Lee. Many of you will already know his work as director of recent productions of Taming of the Shrew, Noises Off and Othello (the last for Class Act Theatre), or may have seen him as Prospero in The Tempest at the New Fortune Theatre. Before moving to Australia two years ago, Stephen worked as an actor and director in London and also taught both Shakespeare and classical theatre in several drama schools there, including Lee Strasberg, The Method Studio and Italia Conti. He has directed well over fifty productions, including more than twenty Shakespeare plays.

Brilliant idea – now Attic needs actors!
If any of the above attracts you, and you wish to audition, then please send us your name, contact details, resume and photo (if Stephen has worked with you before, a resume and photo is not essential). We are looking to run all three plays in rep, but realistically we may need to cast two teams of actors, one for the Shakespeare, and another for the first and third plays. We are very interested, though, in anyone willing to play in all three. And even if you are only able to try for one play…do let us know – we’d hate to lose the perfect cast member just because you couldn’t manage more.

Auditions will be on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th October, with rehearsals starting in late October for play one, and will probably be three days a week.

Is there any money in this?
OK, this is definitely Margaret’s area! She has already negotiated some fantastic deals which will help to keep our costs down and has great contacts with ‘persons of influence’ who are as excited about seeing this project work as we are. However, realistically, we cannot initially offer anything other than a co-operative style share of profits. It is our not-too-distant aim to do more, but the Company has to prove its worth before the real sponsorships and grants start to flow – and we can only do that with great actors and great productions.

Still, if you want the chance to be in on the ground floor of what is already shaping up to be a truly exciting and challenging theatre company, let us know NOW.

Send your details, plus an indication of which plays you are willing to commit to, either electronically or by mail. We will get back to you if we are able to offer you an audition and will keep your details on file for twelve months even if there is nothing suitable for you in the first season.
