How often do you sit in a cafe and just observe people?

171 participants over 2 weeks

weekly 82 votes 47%
less often 22 votes 12%
never 22 votes 12 %
daily 21 votes 12%
fortnightly 13 votes 7%
monthly 11 votes 6%

About 60% of us practise this weekly or more frequently; a quarter of us rarely or never.

Perhaps the poll was influenced by how many of us drink coffee..?

Observing people is a very useful skill to have as an actor. It doesn't really matter where...in fact it's useful to observe people (and ourselves) in a variety of places and situations. But the key word is to really OBSERVE. It doesn't really count to just be looking at people, if you're not taking mental notes and really watching them to discover character traits, physical movement, emotional states, vocal characteristics, etc. And then you need to find a way of recreating and translating this observed information so it applies to your own body and personality when required to develop a character.

If you practise this occasionally, you'll find it can enhance your understanding of acting. You can never stop learning.
