Lysistrata: Return of the Phallus!

That's right folks...and about time too!

Blak Yak Theatre Inc will "mount" its next production from Wednesday, July 28th at The Studio @ Subiaco Theatre Centre.

Lysistrata: A WomanÂ’s Translation, provides a wonderfully cheesy comic vehicle for a very pertinent and timely message about humankind and our fixation on war. The play was the script of choice for last yearÂ’s Lysistrata Project, which saw more than 350 theatre companies all over the world stage a simultaneous play reading on the 3/3/03, protesting against the war in Iraq.

Lysistrata, an Athenian woman fed up with war, rallies together the women of Greece to seize the Treasury, stage a sex strike and force the men of each warring faction to come home and sign a truce.

This makes for a fast-paced and bawdy affair, including the pompous MagistrateÂ’s antics of male domination and the celibacy-sworn MyrrhineÂ’s relentless teasing of her sex-starved, phallus-laden husband. Meanwhile, the Chorus of Old Men and Chorus of Old Women square off in a hilarious battle of wits and guts, ultimately resulting in a reunion of genders, ages and political positions.

Lysistrata: A WomanÂ’s Translation plays from 8pm, July 28-31 and August 4-7 at The Studio, Subiaco Theatre Centre, 180 Hamersley Road, Subiaco. Tickets are available through BOCS on 9484 1133 or at the venue.

Re: Lysistrata: Return of the Phallus!

Hi to all involved.

I would have liked to audition, but didnt organise my self in time... but that is another story. For those of you that haven't performed in the Studio Theatre at the STC I am in the current production of Snugglepot & Cuddlepie in the Studio Theatre. There is tiered seating, three or four rows, on the left hand side of the stage, in front, and stage right as well. with cushions on the floor for the kids. It seats between 90 and 100 people. But the dressing room is right next to the stage, only separated by a curtain. There is NO backstage, so the only offstage way to get to the other side, is through the foyer. For any other info Just ask...

Thanks for the heads up, Luke.

I directed One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest at the same venue last year and am, unfortunately, all too familiar with its lack of backstage space.

I have tried my best to prepare the 25 cast members of Lysistrata, both physically and emotionally, for the "cosy" experience they are in for.

There is something decidedly scary about 25 actors crammed into a 3x3m room!

Wish us luck, and if you come see the show, say hello!

I will try!!
We have the same cast number, but we didn't manage too badly, if I do say so myself.
