Netiquette
Sat, 1 Aug 1998, 11:59 amMany of you will be familiar with this term for Internet etiquette - but chances are that some users of this website aren't.A couple of recent posts have touched on these areas in passing.Rob has voiced his concerns about his perceived treatment at the hands of a local company. He is entitled to do so, as long as he says nothing libellous. If he does, then he can be sued. The internet is no different to any other means of communication in this respect.Jeff was concerned at posting a phone number for auditions without first obtaining permission. This same phone number may already have been printed in the ITA Link and a local paper. If so, then the information is in the public arena and can be freely reproduced on the internet. A concerned individual does have the power to require you to remove the information, but my understanding is that they have no recourse to complain about invasion of privacy. This latter concern is a frequent one encountered by groups attempting to provide information via the internet. Their members are very happy to have their phone details placed on a public notice board, put on a poster or printed in a community newspaper but are very concerned at the same information being available on the internet. In the light of media commentary about the internet i think their paranoia is understandable, if without any real foundation.Community Newspapers are distributed to more than 600,000 households per week. This website is visited by just over 100 people in the same period.CheersGrant
