MEDIA RELEASE:

Union probe exposes reality TV farce

A reality TV show has been canned and contestantsÂ’ money refunded after actorsÂ’ union concern led AustraliaÂ’s corporate watchdog to warn promoters against making false and misleading claims.

Starsearch Productions Pty Ltd claimed in an April letter to have 20,000 telephone inquiries from hopefuls wanting to be picked for “certain stardom for all” in “our exciting new television show” to be filmed at an undisclosed location later this year.

The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance raised the alert in WA after receiving local complaints that Starsearch was using a Gold Coast address to seek a $125 “processing fee” from each applicant for auditions and screen tests.

Alliance WA Branch President David Cohen said the demand for money set alarm bells ringing in an industry where such actions are viewed with deep suspicion.

“It looked like an attempt to exploit young people desperate to be on television at any cost,” he said.

“We are pleased that swift union action has led to money being refunded.

“We urge people to be wary of any schemes that claim to guarantee instant TV stardom.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it was concerned that Starsearch may have accepted money from would-be contestants when it had no intention or realistic prospect of providing the services it had promised.

In Queensland, ACCC Assistant Director Guy Launder said steps were being taken to ensure that Starsearch refunded all contestantsÂ’ money.

Starsearch and its directors would be advised of their obligations under the Trade Practices Act (1974), including a prohibition on making false and misleading claims.

Starsearch is listed by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission as a NSW-registered company that traded previously as “We Finance Anything Pty Ltd”.

Anyone with concerns about Starsearch or it operations should ring David Cohen on 0414 780 441 or Alliance WA Branch Secretary Michael Sinclair-Jones on 9227 7043 or 0411 885 316.
