In another thread, Crg hit on an interesting fact of life that our starry-eyed hopefuls might want to remember. Actors are generally at the bottom of the industry food-chain.

I was talking with some fellow thesps a week or so ago about a certain, now more-or-less ubiquitous telemarketing company in Sydney that provides a much-needed alternate income for struggling actors.

One of them was saying that it's a great place to network, which I'm certain is true.. although I suspect only an extent. Someone (could have been me, memory's fading, senility does that) commented that a room full of actors is perhaps not as ideal a networking ground as, say, a room full of directors, writers, producers, or cash-rich businessmen with philanthropic tendencies!

It seems to me that self-devised co-ops are all well and good, but a serious career hinges upon befriending the people you won't recognise from TV or your local Cineplex.

To those out there with dreams of Hollywood, I'd suggest that instead of sucking up to the the fashionably skinny, sleep-deprived, undoubtedly drug-addled, and probably shorter-than-he-looks-onscreen actor with a skin full of tequila and a pants-pocket full of Trojans, you try the fat, balding, fifty-something Jewish guy in the corner who signs his paycheck and posts his bail.

Just a thought.
