Advice and help needed
Mon, 24 May 2004, 06:28 amHi, my name is Mike and I have just come across your forum while looking for theatres in Australia. The reason I am searching is that my daughter will be going on her gap year to Spain in a little while and, for reasonÂ’s too long to explain here, I feel I would like to take some time out as well.
I have been involved with Amateur Dramatics in the UK for about 18 years, mainly as Chief LX for a company that does 22 productions a year. I design about 4 shows a year and help with most of the others. I am capable of designing and constructing basic sets and have a good knowledge of Stage Management. My “day job” is IT Systems Engineer.
What I would like to do is come over to Australia and work with a theatre company to broaden my experience with the aim of returning to the UK when my daughter goes to Uni. My first question is, does anyone know if I would be able to get a visa to do this and secondly would I be able to find any work, paid, profit share, unpaid?
I know this may not be quite the right place to ask but I thought it might be worth a go.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike
If you have no ties to Australia, you will be able to get a 12 month visa. You have to apply for a working visa and this can take some time up to 6 months. IÂ’m living and working in London at present, but IÂ’m Australian so I'm lucky. I can come and go. Australia is full of wonderful theatre companies and a list of endless talent. Contact the regional theatres throughout the eastern states. The tech side of the industry welcomes people for work experience. A paid job in the theatre is always possible, but this is always a great way to get your foot in the door, especially if your experience is non-professional. Perth has a string of wonderful local based theatre companies, these groups produce high quality productions and IÂ’m sure they would love to hear from you. Playlovers, Blak yak, Garrick, Stirling Players are to name but a few.
Best wishes
