Incursion - I've heard this term used frequently over the last few years, when performing Barking Gecko shows in schools. It struck me as an odd word, but the context seemed to make sense. But, prompted by reading a quote from Reg Bolton, I finally looked it up in the dictionary, and find it disturbingly ironic that this misuse of the language originated from our Education Department....

"sudden, uninvited entrance into a place; an invasion, attack, etc"

The quote from Reg Bolton's Suitcase Circus website:

Incidentally, do you in the States suffer from the word "incursion" in this context? It used to be that a class trip to the zoo was an "outing", and the puppet show in the assembly hall was a "school visit". The outing has become an "excursion", and, incredibly, with no reference to the dictionary, the visit of Suitcase Circus and others is deemed an "incursion"! Look it up. It's "a hostile invasion". It's Saddam Hussein, Ghengis Khan stuff! It's rape and pillage! A Pre-school teacher recently phoned and asked if I was available for an incursion next week. I said "Do you have any virgins?" "Pardon?" "How about Thursday?".

Re: Drama Invasions

Yep, I can just see it... highly organised actor commando raids, 'neutralising' school admins with the objective of isolating groups of pre-teens to create a safe 'staging area' for puppet shows, and whatnot! ... Let the entertainment begin!

I can just visualise the evaluation forms!

Re: Drama Invasions

This morning, my eight year old daughter handed me a parental permission form to sign from her class teacher. The bold typed heading read:

CLASS INCURSION : MEINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS.

I wonder how many other parents like myself, were blissfully unaware that what was seemingly an educational program warning our kids about the dangers of a deadly virus, was in fact a declaration of germ warfare by the Education Department. :-))

So that's where the weapons of mass destruction went!
