His Majesty's Secret code..?
Sat, 10 Jan 2004, 06:20 pmWondering if there's anyone out there who can answer this...
Above the auditorium in His Majesty's Theatre, Perth, is a gorgeously ornate painted ceiling. I understand it was originally built as a dome that could open to the open sky, but with all the pigeon feathers and dust etc that was likely to drop onto the seating area, it was rebuilt as a solid roof, but painted to give the impression it is still a huge dome.
While looking up at it, I notice among the concentric circles there are little squares with letters of the alphabet printed in them. They are symmetrical across the circle, but apart from that I can see no pattern that makes any sense. I haven't noted down the letters, but they appear really random ...J M D C L etc...about 15 different letters repeated twice around the circumference...
Can anyone enlighten me as to what they mean?
Cheers
Craig

Re: His Majesty's Secret code cracked
Thanks Christina, funny you should suggest that, because that's exactly what has happened...I bumped into Ivan as he was passing the backstage foyer, and naturally, he knew the answer almost before I'd finished the question.
The circle of letters C W M J R S D P L I...C W M J R S D P L I incorporated subtly in the roof design stand simply for the initials of the surnames of the craftsmen responsible for refurbishing the ceiling.
See, the things you can learn in those rare moments when you happen to be lying on your back on His Majesty's stage, contemplating the ceiling...!
Cheers,
Craig
