Thu, 17 July 2003, 01:33 pmLast night, Jemma Gurney and I sat in on a dress rehearsal for Psycho Beach Party. Halfway through Act 1, Jemma was on the floor with tears rolling down her face, and I was gasping for breath. It really was THAT poignant. No, that's not the word I'm looking for. "Piss-funny." That's the one.
Even if you've never watched a Gidget movie in your life (guilty!), Psycho Beach Party is still screamingly funny. It takes a few minutes to get into the corn and parody of it all (like watching a Shakespeare play - it usually takes 5 or 10 minutes to adjust your brain to the way they're talking) but after that, it's an hilarious rollercoaster.
It's not a long play. If it starts at 8pm, it WILL be finished before 10pm, and it moves so fast - it was interval before we knew it. Everyone has their moment in the sun and gets to ham it up, 60s style. The costumes are great (Op Shops are a godsend!) and ALL the 60s beach music is original compositions by Mr Eliot McCann (soundtrack available for sale in the foyer).
The venue is heated. While you might emerge to find your car covered in ice, the auditorium is a helluva lot warmer. Tickets are $15 and $12 concession and can be booked on 0500 52 52 59 (or through me). Honestly, it's worth it just to see the surfing scene alone!
I know a few people were concerned because they weren't impressed with the movie version, but, as we've said before, it's an almost completely different story. The movie has a different plot, many different characters, and a completely different "psycho". The play came before the movie, and the original is still the best.
Check out the second of our postcards (attached), both of which were deemed by Kalamunda Council "too risqué to display!"
July 23, 25, 26, 30, Aug 1 & 2 at 8pm at the Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre, Canning Rd (next door to Kalamunda Senior High School), Kalamunda (duh!). There's that booking number again: 0500 52 52 59.
