From the Hills Gazette, 28th September, 2013 (http://www.communitydigital.com.au/OLIVE/ODE/HILLSGAZETTEEAST/Default.aspx?href=HG%2F2013%2F09%2F28&pageno=16&view=document): LOCAL identity Emilio Furfaro, of Pickering Brook, died on September 17, aged 57. Mr Furfaro was involved with KADS Theatre and also a popular bass player in Hills music groups. His life even inspired a play written by Lucy Eyre in 2010 called Patriation Road, which was performed by KADS Theatre. The play was based on the life story of the Furfaro family, who migrated to Pickering Brook in the 1930s from Italy. “There have been three generations of family that have run the orchard since and this is their fascinating story,” Ms Eyre said. “This local story is an insight into the lives of a resilient and courageous family. “It has strong themes about the importance of the family unit and addresses the challenges these people faced when they moved to Australia.” Mr Furfaro had cancer and died at home surrounded by family. He was the son of Frank and Anna (both deceased) and described as the loving brother of Ray and Walter Furfaro. He was also an uncle to Blake, Luke, Gabriella and Isaac. Called Mil by those close to him, he will be remembered for his kindness and what he did without thinking that made him so special to everyone who knew him. In 2012, he accepted a certificate on Anzac Day on behalf of the Pickering Brook Heritage Group for his father Frank, who had served in WWII as a private in the 58/59th Australian Battalion and was severely wounded.
