No one can argue that Perth is the greatest place in the world to live. The relaxed, downbeat lifestyle attracts all but the most ardent anal retentives. Given half the chance, I'm sure most of us would spend all our time in boardshorts & bathers. Unfortunately, we're often constrained by the vagaries of fashion and the vicissitudes of the weather. Have you, like Dean Schulze, ever wished you could spend July in a bikini?

Well wish no more! Blak Yak Theatre is proud to announce auditions (on May 4) for our next production, "Psycho Beach Party." A comic parody of 1960s beach movies and horror movies, "Psycho Beach Party" started life as a stageplay in the '80s, spawning an underground cult movie starring Thomas Gibson (Dharma & Greg), Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under).

Gidget Goes Psycho

Just in case there are a few of you out there who are confused, this is an audition for a PLAY, not a movie. Blak Yak is doing the stage play of Psycho Beach Party.

So if anyone was too scared to audition, thinking it was a movie, drop Nick a line and book yourself a time. There are still spots available on Sunday 4th of May. If you can't make the Sunday we can make alternative arrangements.

Re: Gidget Goes Psycho

hopefully the play is MUCH better because the movie is big-time crap.

Thou surly doghearted coxcomb!

Re: Gidget Goes Psycho

I watched the video for Psycho Beah Party yesterday that was disappointing and agree that it is BIG-TIME crap.

The play needs to be engaging because the movie is boring.

Re: Gidget Goes Psycho

Im sure the director and Blak Yak are enjoying your positive votes of confidance at the start of their rehearsal period.

Let's remember that plays that are turned in to films misfire more often that they hit, (dare I sayit much like any change of medium)

We are seeing the same situation with He died with a fallafel in his hand, reportedly a good play but a shite film.

Will it be a good production? Who knows but give them a chance and don't bury them before its opened.

Re: Gidget Goes Psycho

hey man, i was like being totally supportive of Black Yaks theatrical venture and merely voicing my opinion of the MOVIE (which was seriously, big time crap. no really it was. it could not have been more lame if it tried. Not even that guy from Dharma and Greg could save it. And to think that poor girl from Six Feet Under almost had her career fisted before it began. Just thinking about it makes me sick).

You know, I felt something needed to be said, and I said it. Psycho Beach Party or whatever the hell its called is celluoid turd. it was tv this one time. i watched some in the hope that it might get better and well, it just didn't. They stole and violated a good hour of my life. a film is supposed to entertain or engage as jason said, sort of, not make me feel dirty. not unless Ron Jeremy is in it. So.
so yeah, good luck with the play guys. don't let it blow like the movie.

Re: Gidget Goes Psycho

Peoples going to theatre has much to do with confidance.Confidance with the company, confidance with the actors involved and confidance with the script.

I appreciate you were making an opinion on the movie and not the play (and incidentally I was commenting on both posts who raised the spectre of the film ) but to the average reader on this website (me in this instance) it didnt seem the most supportive way to comment on an upcoming project for a company, who like us all are hoping the public are confidant enough about their work to come and see it.

I didnt mean to suggest that you were being destructive but yours and Jasons posts read to me as a "Oh god why are they doing that play" posting.

But the exciting thing is our discussion has certainly raised the profile of the production and people will now be curious about its relative success versus the film, so any negative results have been well and truely purged by now

Did You See Episode One?

Speaking of celluloid turd, you all saw Episode One, didn't you?

Ok: A) The play's completely different to the movie.
B) Jason's actually auditioning for the play. (Slobber on, Jason, Slobber on)
C) None of you will ever know exactly how brilliant this play's going to be until you come and see it. And see it you will!

And if anyone asks I'm not the director.

Oh, yes I am... I forget things sometimes.

Be Good

Re: Did You See Episode One?

Steady on with the slopper Nick, no need to get defensive. Jason is the best slopper around. Don't you need any sloppers in this show, if you do you would be hard pressed to find anyone who can slopper as good as Jason.

I know this gets said a lot, but it's certainly true in this case. As I said at the start, Psycho Beach Party started life as a stageplay (tentatively titled Gidget Goes Psycho), THEN it was turned into a movie.

The movie had its moments, but it's known moreso for who's in it, rather than the movie itself. I'll admit I was worried until Nick gave me the script and I had a damn good laugh. Yep, the plot's almost totally different and it concentrates on the core characters rather than the peripherals introduced in the movie. No cross-dressing cops. No Swedish murderers. Just fun, beach and bikinis.

Thanks to everyone who's taking such an interest. Glad we can still stir up a bit of a controversy.

One More Time

OK people say it with me, this audition is for a PLAY not a MOVIE. One is filmed and put together piece by piece and shown later, the other is done live, night after night. Blak Yak Theatre Inc. is doing the P.L.A.Y which came first, not a M.O.V.I.E

If you audition for us you will be auditioning for a play, not a movie. I cannot stress this enough!

Sorry, but I keep getting emails from people who think it might be 'fun' to be in our movie.

Play, not movie!!!!!

Re: Psycho Beach Party

Well, it's July already. Three more weeks and Blak Yak Theatre's production, Psycho Beach Party, will open at the Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre. We'll soon see that the play is a BIG improvement on the movie adaptation. (But isn't that usually the case? How often has a movie been better than the play that spawned it?)

Check out the info on the "What's On" page.
