Stephen Lee; Review of a Director
Mon, 24 Mar 2003, 02:08 pmI am aware that this is quite unusual, and I may be on the wrong notice board, but I would like to give a brief review of a director.
I was in The Taming of The Shrew. The show finished on Sat night and thank you to all who came along and for all of your kind comments.
Stephen Lee, the director of Shrew, runs workshops and classes in Shakespeare, Method and other techniques under the guise of The Method Studio.
My advice to you; GO. His technique, inspiration, feeling for the text, unfailing enthusiasm, compassion and support have not only made for one of the most enjoyable productions I have ever been in, but probably the best one too. From the outset he infused the production and the cast with a feeling of fun, pace and energy that we carried with us at all times, even through lost voices, costume disasters and THOSE BLOODY PEACOCKS!!
Stephen has taught me a lot about Shakespeare, voice and movement technique, timing and my own ability. He has made me a better performer. I know he has classes (at The Method Studio) which have already started, but I urge you to contact him if you want to learn about acting from a professional with a wealth of knowledge and experience, and one hell of a teacher.
I think I speak for the whole cast Steve when I say that we can't thank you enough for the pleasure and privilege of working with you.

Tue, 25 Mar 2003, 01:26 pmYes! Yes! Bouquets to Mr Stephen Lee!! I attended some of his preliminary workshops late last year and had a ball with everyone! This man's enthusiasm and sense of fun are thoroughly contagious. He loves Shakespeare's words with a passion - I've seen tears in his eyes when quoting "The Bard" and for my money, THAT's the man to learn from! Sitting in the audience at "Shrew" last Thursday evening I found myself thinking "Wow! Now THIS is how it SHOULD be done!!"
Congrats to everyone involved and particularly to The Meddoes who just loves the text so much that he delivers it as if he'd written it himself. I'll also mention Leah (Biondello-a?), Dario (Grumio) and Mark Blades (Hortensio etc) who's comic ability and timing were superb and had me in fits all night.
Overall I loved the madcap & mayhem of the production and honestly felt I was seeing it in it's true representation for the first time. No heavy slog through dialogue here and it was evident that everyone on stage was having a ball.
I'll be bringing a big stick to knock out the opposition at Steve's next auditions!
