Mirth, madness, horror and hilarity – six actors and no script

A play with a difference is coming to the Hollywood Subiaco Bowling Club this June. While it has six actors, three musicians and one director, it’s missing something – a script. Inspired by the work of renowned improvisational film director Mike Leigh, The Locker Room sees a different character take centre stage each night, asked to clean out their locker, and starting the person on a journey into the unknown. Directed by Perth improv veteran Glenn Hall – a national Theatresports champion – it builds on his company Just Improvise’s recent unscripted theatre hit In A New York Minute, which played two sell-out seasons at the Subiaco Arts Centre and also toured nationally. With The Locker Room, all cast members have devised and researched their own character for the show. Each has undergone an interview process with Hall to unravel layers of history and motivation… yet what happens when the characters meet on stage is unknown. “Improvisation is my passion,” Hall said. “My company Just Improvise specialises in inspiring people to improvise for both business and pleasure. “Crafting an unscripted piece of theatre with such talented actors and musicians, working together as one, is truly exhilarating. “Audiences really embraced the style with our last show, In A New York Minute, which explored the notion of improvisation as more than a purely comedic medium. “The Locker Room brings together deep characters, based on real people and experiences, and together with their respective histories will create an ephemeral experience the performers and audience will share in real time, never to be repeated. “There is something so special and magical about that synergy. It’s truly beautiful storytelling.” Cellist Tristen Parr is The Locker Room’s musical director and has reunited The Triple Threats, the live improvising band from In A New York Minute, featuring pianist Christopher de Groot and percussionist Callum Moncrieff. Together, they will spontaneously compose and perform The Locker Room’s filmic soundtrack. The Locker Room will also travel to Canberra for Improvention 2012 in July, where Hall and Parr will be featured workshop presenters, alongside renowned improvisers from Australia, New Zealand, the US, UK and South Africa. Just Improvise also produces a monthly Theatresports show at the Hollywood Subiaco Bowling Club on the first Sunday off the month, regularly playing to full houses.
