is it worth subscribing to an audition site for theatre/film/tv? if so what are the best sites for Perth auditions?

I've already subscribed to starnow for local student auditions, and I check FTI forums regularly, as well as here for theatre, I was wondering if there are any others worth checking out that I havent seen yet? I came across quietonset.com.au but you need to need to pay 89.95 a year, which seems a little pricy. I was wondering whether anyone's subscribed to it? I'd like to know whether there's a decent amount of auditions posted for Perth. There isn't that many on starnow, but its quite a lot cheaper, so its not a big deal. I'd hate to subscribe and find out it's mainly just for auditions over east. Also, what type of work is it mainly? paid or unpaid? I'd like to get some paid work opportunities, as I've mainly only done amature work, but is it better to get an agent for that? and I know it's a little off topic, and I appologise if I missed it in the FAQ section, but can you get an agent without going to acting school? Thank you for any help everyone, would be much appreciated!

Paid is Professional

 Paid work is very rarely (if every) published on free or public access sites, unless they are small budget productions or the occasional extra. So if you are serious about getting paid work, you have two choices;

1. Get an agent to help you out

2. Keep an almost constant view on every bit of news you can get about new productions, etc and hope you find something.

Quite on Set has a very strong Eastern States focus. Very rarely has anything Western. Great value for money if you are East.

Star Now is a great service for Independent and non-paid productions. There has been an increase in paid type work recently, but as I mentioned above, it is low budget stuff. Nothing wrong with that as you get first hand experience and can develop a contacts network. If you are happy to do that, you get to build up a portfolio and show reel which can only help down the track.

Link up with JC Casting via Face Book or Twitter. They are Casting Consultants who take the very rare option of public calls. They are not Agents though. They work for the producers, not the actors. I've managed to snag a few adds and extra roles through them.

Show Cast is, as far as I am aware, the only Official Casting web site, used by Agents and available to the general public. They charge a hefty fee for the Web Services, but it is very comprehensive service and quite legit. http://www3.showcast.com.au/showcast/

Other than that, I would never expect big opportunities from web based audition sites, especially the free ones. Have a look at the Finding and Agent page in this site's FAQ pages.

Thanks! thats very helpful!

Thanks! thats very helpful! I'm glad I asked about quiet on set before I payed, thats good to know. The show cast site is interesting, but I do see what you mean about the hefty fee, its a good idea as an option though. Seems like an agent might be the way to go in the future after I've built up my experience. Thanks again! :)
