The Trial of C.Y. O'Connor
Sat, 8 Feb 2003, 01:26 pmC.Y. OÂ’CONNOR - CORRUPT OR HERO?
One of W.AÂ’s most legendary figures is in the dock - and invites the audience to decide the verdict!
This year marks the centenary of the Goldfields Pipeline which was completed in January, 1903. As part of the celebrations the Australian-Irish Heritage Association and the Irish Theatre Players are presenting The Trial of C.Y. OÂ’Connor by Tony Evans.
The play is based on Mr Evans recent book ‘C.Y. O’Connor: His Life and Legacy’, commissioned by the U.W.A. Press. Mr Evans is known mainly for his work of thirty years at the ABC as T.V. presenter for the state’s evening public affairs programme.
C.Y. OÂ’Connor, the Chief-Engineer of the Kalgoorlie Pipeline, was dogged by accusations of corrupt practices, deception, and a disregard for the safety of his men during his life-time and occasionally even today. One prominent, contemporary historian has written that OÂ’Connor has been "sanctified" and history has treated him too sympathetically.
What is the truth about OÂ’Connor? Was he a flawed character revered more on account of his tragic death than for his achievements? The evidence will be examined in this exciting court room drama.
The play, directed by PerthÂ’s most celebrated actor and director, Edgar Metcalfe, will be performed at the Irish Club Theatre in Subiaco from the 13-16, 20-22 February. For bookings call 9287 2712.
Cast: Irene French, Colin O'Brien, Joe Purcell, Stephen Dawson, Joe O'Sullivan, Talei Howell-Price, John Spurling, Sam Chandler, Louis Byrnes, John Dunne, Michele Anderson, and Ormonde Waters.
