The Day It All Ended --- RIP, TAG (Tom) Hungerford
Mon, 20 June 2011, 11:25 pmSad news:
Tom Hungerford, Perth writer known for his wonderful short stories, including the book "Stories From Suburban Road"...from which came the play "The Day It All Ended" and the highly successful play sharing the same title as the book, died yesterday at the age of 96.
"Stories From Suburban Road" was recently made into an ABC TV series, and is still frequently performed. I directed a production at John Curtin College last year, and I understand Stirling Players will be performing it in September this year.
I was very proud to have worked in the original ensemble that helped Alan Becher devise the stage show with Tom in 1990 (in my signature I still strongly identify myself with the role of the racehorse goanna); and I was fortunate to have revisited the play 10 years later to tour nationally.
Tom was a funny bugger; sharp-witted; an old-school gentleman with a constant hint of mischief in his eyes.
He was a wonderful storyteller in person, and his words on the page will carry his memory on.
So long Tom.
