To Jedi For
Tue, 20 Aug 2002, 03:39 pmNot really theatre related, but I suppose a tribute to the power (force?) of a strong character and story idea...
'Jedi Knight' has been offically recognised as a religion in the UK census. (Thanks to the power of email, a similar campaign happened during Australia's last census...wonder if it will achieve the same result?)
Interesting article at:

Cheers,

Re: To Jedi For
Last time the census was taken, the Census Board (The Folks What Count The Numbers) got wind of it, and threatened fines to those who had the temerity to claim their religion was Jedi. Which makes you think; what if They don't agree with ANYTHING you put on the Census forms? "Muslim?!? We don't like THAT!!" How far reaching are their powers? What powers?
Me? I put "musician" as my religion (well, it's kinda true) and threatened to sue the Zappa Estate if They came after me.

There WAS a threat in Aus of a $1000 fine to those who provided false information; but there was a similar threat in the UK and NZ, and I believe nothing's come of it. The UK census apparently excluded the question about religion from the fine...after all, how the hell (or whatever you believe in) do they prove that that kind of information IS false? If I believe it, it's TRUE...that's what a religion IS.
I DID put "Jedi", because I thought it was a fun idea, and I couldn't remember the name of the religion led by Bacchus. I figure by the time they compile the results and come after me (if I'm the only one) it'll be four years anyway and I'll have saved the fine....how exciting to be persecuted by the government for being the only Jedi! Of course, if I'm not the only one, the force will be with me!
Cheers,
Craig
PS. Have you seen the article about the woman in the US who is suing a radio station because she thought they'd promised her a new Toyota, when in fact, they gave her a toy Yoda ...!

Re: Jedi Hard
Hey, you won't be the only one. I put myself down as a Jedi too.

Re: Jedi Hard With a Vengeance
From MSN news -
70,000 worship Jedi
August 27, 2002
MORE than 70,000 Australians identified their religion as Jedi, Jedi Knight or Jedi-related in last year's national census.
The high number of Jedi-related religions was a response to an e-mail published before the census, calling on Star Wars fans to state Jedi as their religion.
The e-mail stated that if enough people did so, Jedi would become a fully recognised and legal religion.
However the Australian Bureau of Statistics says Jedi or Jedi-related responses have been categorised as not defined for census output purposes.
The 70,509 Jedis represent 0.37 per cent of responses to the optional question on religion.
