Whether you sing to your heart’s content, play an instrument or tread the boards, there’s a chance to win $7400 worth of prize money in the North of Perth Music Festival. Now in its 54th year, the festival is open to all West Australians with a range of awards on offer for piano, strings, operetta or musical theatre, vocalists, instrumentalists and speech and drama, in junior and senior categories. Gold medallions, trophies and certificates will be given to all first prize winners, in addition to prize money. Auditions will be held from September 1 to 24 – but you need to put in an entry form before June 28 to be involved. Entry fees are $7 for soloists, $12 for the duet section and $16 for trios, quartets, ensembles, choirs and groups. Contestants need to arrange their own accompanists; no recorded sound or amplification is allowed. “The North of Perth Music Festival is truly a celebration of our community’s diversity through the arts,” Bayswater Mayor Terry Kenyon said. “We’re looking for musicians, singers and actors to really bring the festival to life, making sure it’s as vibrant as ever. “In 2008, we even had a choir come all the way from Kalgoorlie to compete, which highlights how popular the festival has become over the past five decades.” North of Perth Music Festival Secretary Frank Giannini described the event as a valuable opportunity for people to gain public performance experience. ”It’s a chance to build confidence and receive helpful and personal reports from qualified adjudicators,” he said. “The festival is a true celebration of the arts, helping to bring the community together to enjoy a range of entertainment. The City of Bayswater is also offering music scholarships to the value of $3600 for people who live in the area. “It’s important to foster and encourage talent where possible, helping people to make the most of their passion,” Mayor Kenyon said. For North of Perth Music Festival entry forms and more information, contact Frank Giannini on 0409 292 876. Call 9272 0975 for more details on City of Bayswater music scholarships. Information about the festival and scholarships can also be downloaded from www.bayswater.wa.gov.au. North of Perth Music Festival winners’ concerts will be held on October 22 and 23.
