Fairytale musical goes beyond “happily ever after” at Roleystone Theatre
Sun, 4 Apr 2010, 10:21 pmInspired by the timeless stories of the Brothers Grimm, Into The Woods brings together classic fairytales in a production that comments on contemporary society.
The Stephen Sondheim musical, directed by Carolyn Latter at Roleystone Theatre, blends together various familiar fairytales with an original story of a baker and his wife attempting to reverse a curse on their family so they can have a child.
It’s all done with spectacular musical numbers, following characters from Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella and the consequences of their various wishes and quests.
“They each pursue individual wishes until their stories become entangled in unexpected ways, revealing what happens following ‘happily ever after’,” Latter said.
“Into the Woods is a show I have always loved since seeing a television broadcast of it in the early 1990s with Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleeson.
“I love Stephen Sondheim’s work and when musical director Matt Austin approached me to submit it to Roleystone Theatre, I was on board straight away.”
Latter said one of her biggest challenges was staying true to the fairytale characters without making them too over-the-top or two-dimensional.
“The premise that these are not real people means there is a possibility they might come across as farcical and unbelievable but with hard work on character development from the cast we will overcome this.
“The actual ‘woods’ themselves have to move around the characters as they travel deeper into the forest and we need to be mindful of not blocking sight of the actors.”
A relative newcomer to WA, Latter has a wealth of theatre experience after living most of her life in Newcastle and directing musicals such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Guys and Dolls, Me and My Girl, Oklahoma, Little Shop of Horrors and Chicago, which scored her numerous City of Newcastle Drama Awards.
Since moving to Perth in July 2007, Latter has performed in and directed productions for Darlington’s Marloo Theatre and Guildford’s Garrick Theatre, also performing in Les Miserables at the Regal Theatre last year.
“Into The Woods is one of Sondheim’s most family-friendly works and will appeal to audiences of all ages,” Latter said.
It plays at Roleystone Theatre at 8pm, April 9, 10, 14, 16, 17, 21, 23 and 24. Tickets are $20 adults, $15 children (17 and under) – book on 9397 5730 or through BOCS on 9484 1133.
